Meet Katy

My Name is Katy and I have been working for Water Babies for 14 years now.  I was first introduced to Water Babies by a work colleague after my son was born and have never looked back!

I absolutely loved the lessons and they were the highlight of my week, I always loved swimming as a child and saw it as being a fun activity to do with him as well as learning an important life skill.

My job is varied and there are lots of things I enjoy..

Water Baby two arrived 18 months later so with Grandads help I was soon taking two babies swimming each week, feeling more involved and meeting even more Water Babies parents.  I used to work in hotel management and was made redundant when I tried to return to work. I was dreading working the hours anyway and Rosie my teacher suggested I give Tamsin a Call the rest is history!!

Over the years my working hours and levels of responsibility have grown and changed with the needs of both me and my family.  I currently teach classes for 12 hours a week and often pick up extra shifts at times that suit me making some of my working hours flexible.  In addition to this I have been mentoring new teachers for the last 7 years and am currently training to be an assessor.  I can also be found helping with ad hoc admin for our fabulous office team, baking cakes, delivering supplies, anything really!

My job is varied and there are lots of things I enjoy but my favourite is still spending time with our families in the pool.  I have seen lots of families come and go but my enthusiasm remains to deliver the best lessons I can. The rewards are priceless. Smiling faces, grateful parents, a sense of achievement, the feeling when something finally clicks.  All whilst teaching a life skill.  I am also able to pass this experience and enthusiasm to the newer members of the team helping to maintain high standards, gain qualifications and help with ongoing training.

So if you are thinking about becoming a Water Babies teacher, and you love being in the pool go for it!  There are so many opportunities they role can be whatever you want it to be!

So that’s the work bit – what else do I get out of it? Friends for life in both parents I met in swimming lessons over 15 years ago, to working with some amazing people helping and supporting each other.  I have had some wonderful experiences; teaching with Karen Pickering, meeting the directors, visiting Tommy’s centres and charity events, having extra fun at fundraising and themed lessons the list is endless.

But none of this would have been possible without Tamsin, she has supported and believed in me making me feel empowering me to be best I can be.  I am excited to see where the rest of my journey with Water Babies will go.
