Sure, cosying up with your newborn is fun but having your one-year-old start to understand you? That’s another kind of fun. It’s time to start building their mini library; pack it with modern favourites but don’t forget to throw in some that you were read as a child (you’ve been waiting for that moment for a long time, right?). And also, take it from the us, these are the six books that your little terror is going to love. In fact, they’ll probably pick out one that they’ll have you read every night before bed for the next six months. What can we say? They know what they like.

Goodnight Moon

Speaking of bedtime… Goodnight Moon is a classic to ring in the night time. It’s a slow and sleepy saga of a bunny rabbit saying goodnight to everything. Fortunately, the bunny slips into sleep land at the end, and so should your little monster. Yawn.

All Join In

Filled with noisy rhymes made to be read aloud, you’re going to have to get in on the sound effects to make this one come alive. Clashing kitchen pans and hooting horns will make you feel like one of the grumpy grown-ups in the book. But one-year-olds? Yep, they love the racket.

Owl Babies

Owl Babies is a sweet bedtime read about the three baby owls waiting for the mother to come home. You can’t help but say ‘awwwh’. The subtle message is to soothe a child’s anxiety about a parent coming home. They might not fully get it at first, but we hope it’ll be reassuring at some point. (Spoiler alert: mummy owl does come home.)

Where’s Spot?

Grabbing little fingers love lift-the-flap books and we know who’s got plenty of those… Where’s Spot? is great for getting your kid in on the interactive action. Is he behind the door? Is he in the piano? Who knows!

Guess How Much I Love You

Want to teach your kid about love? This is the book to do it. Two Nutbrown Hares, Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare, compete in measures how much they love each other. It’s really simple and really cute.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

Animal books will always be a hit and Brown Bear, Brown Bear is one of the classics. With colourful illustrations and plenty of repetition, it’s going to help your kid learn the colours and the animals. It’s got rhythm too.
